TELEMATIC DREAMING (1992)
Beds, video cameras, projector, monitors, computer, video link.

Originally realised in 1992, Telematic Dreaming consists of two beds in different locations, one in an illuminated space and the other in a blacked-out space.

Directly above the former is a camera, which sends live output to a video projector, suspended above the latter. Thus whatever is happening on the illuminated bed is projected onto the bed in the blackedout space, and also appears on a pair of monitors on either side.

This set-up enables an uncanny experience as participants lie on a bed that they appear to be sharing with a coparticipant in a remote location, who is both present and absent. The experience is particularly unsettling for the participant in the darkened room, where the input from the other room is projected straight onto the bed, creating the illusion that the projected participant can be physically touched.

Paul Sermon studied Fine Arts under Professor Roy Ascott at The University of Wales, and later undertook a postgraduate MFA degree at The University of Reading.

In 1991 he was awarded the Golden Nica at Prix Ars Electronica (Linz), in the category for interactive art, for the hyper media installation Think about the People now. In 1993 he produced the ISDN videoconference installation Telematic Vision as an artist in residence at the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (ZKM), which obtained the Sparkey Award from the Interactive Media Festival in Los Angeles.

From 1993 to 1999 he taught at the HGB Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig. During this time he continued to produce further interactive telematic installations including Telamatic Encounter (1996) and The Tables Turned (1997) for the Ars Electronica Centre and ZKM. From 1997 to 2001 he was Guest Professor for Performance and Environment at the University of Art and Industrial Design in Linz.

Since June 2000 he is based at The University of Salford (United Kingdom), working primarily within the research field of immersive and expanded telematic environments.
