The multiple presence of transmitters broadcasts sound in different directions in our environment. This is the point of departure for this workshop on sound multifocal spatialisation that will be conducted by the artist and teacher José Manuel Berenguer at LABoral on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30.

As part of the educational activities designed at the Sound LAB, a new venue of LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial devoted to experimenting with the different practices of contemporary sound art, the aim of this workshop is to make attendees more familiar with conceptual and technological tools which are able to turn the listening to musical and art products into an experience similar to listening to the world around us.

The participants will have the opportunity to experience the possibilities of multifocal environments and control in real time their behaviour based on the use of multifocal sound devices. These consist essentially of a rich set of speakers arranged in various ways according to the aesthetic needs of projects and the characteristics of the venue hosting them.

The workshop on sound multifocal spasialisation is addressed to musicians, artists and professionals of any kind who are interested in the introduction of sound into art, in general, or in their own productions, in particular. No previous knowledge is required.

José Manuel Berenguer (Barcelona, 1955) is Director of the Orquestra del Caos, Director of the Festival Música13, organised by Nau Coclea, Camallera. Teacher and academic coordinator of the Masters Degree on Sound Art at Universitat de Barcelona, Sound Adviser for multimedia systems at GMMD-Universitat Oberta de Cataluña and teacher of Digital Sound at ESDI-Universitat Ramon Llull, he has also collaborated with other universities and research institutions. Inter-media artist, founder of Côclea with Clara Garí, and also of the Orquestra del Caos, collaborator of the Institut International de Musique Electroacoustique de Bourges (France), he was the designer and first manager of the sound and music lab of the CIEJ of Fundació la Caixa de Pensions, as well as teacher of electroacoustic music at the Conservatory of Bourges. He is currently Honorary Chairman of the International Conference of Electroacoustic Music of the CIM/UNESCO, member of the Académie Internationale de Musique Electroacoustique/Bourges, of the Academy of the National Council of Music of the CIM/UNESCO, trustee of Fundación Phonos, and trustee of Fundació AAVC.

In recent years his art production has focused on installations and, despite his doubts as to the epistemological suitability of these terms, on real time and interaction. Among the topics that he explores are questions related to philosophy and the history of science, the limits of language, ethics, life, artificial intelligence, robotics, the metabolism of information, as well as the very limits of human understanding and perception of the world.

Model aeroplanes for children

LABoral will host also this Saturday, March 29 and Saturday, April 5, the workshop “Maiden make and your first flight. Model aeroplanes for children” where participants will discover the DIY philosophy building model aeroplanes with experimental digital and electronic manufacturing techniques at fabLAB Asturias.

In addition to learning electronics, mechanics, aerodynamics and digital manufacturing, the aim is to bring participants closer to a “manufacture/use/repair/use” consumption model, compared to the current “Buy/use/through away” model.

Participation in this workshop, addressed to children up to 14, includes a pack with parts of the model aeroplane and accessories, as well as the electronic components (engine, variable speed drive and servomotor). However, the transmitter and receiver are not included.
