The network ENCAC, lead by LABoral Centro de Arte with LEV Festival as strategic partner awards six new international artistic residencies

The jury has received 186 applications from 34 countries. Two of these residencies will take place at LABoral: Adam Basanta and Gil Delindro, with a project on the production of new sounds exploring various parameters; and Maotik, with a project focusing on the visualisation of the landscape and its representation by means of surveillance cameras and the use of real-time data

The European Network of Contemporary Audiovisual Creation (ENCAC) –lead by LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial and with LEV Festival as strategic partner- has awarded six new international artistic research and production residencies that will take place between November 2016 and May 2017, at the various entities of the network. Two of the selected artists will develop their residencies at LABoral Centro de Arte: Adam Basanta with Gil Delindro, and Maotik.

The jury was made up by ENCAC's Curatorial Committee: Caroline Gagné (Artistic Director of Avatar), Remco Schuurbiers (co-director of DISK Berlin, CTM Festival), Daniel Romero (Director of the Digital Art Department of hTh CDN Montpellier), Karin Ohlenschläger (Director of activities at LABoral), Lucía García (Executive Director of LABoral), Patrick Gyger (artistic director of Le Lieu Unique), Anaïs Rolez (Professor of Media Art and representative of Le Lieu Unique), Ignacio de la Vega y Cristina de Silva (co-directors of LEV Festival) and Anna Ascencio and Justine Beaujouan (programmers of Mapping Festival).

The jury receive 186 applications from 34 countries. The jury has pointed out the “wide range of approaches brought about by developers, performers and actors, visual artists, film-makers, choreographers and musicians, composers and sound artists who shared their personal view on audiovisual creation and its potential in the interdisciplinary fields of sound, visuals, music, stage arts and the digital culture”.

Two new residencies at LABoral

Adam Basanta and Gil Delindro will develop at LABoral their work Permafrost. This is their first joint project of these two visual artists, musicians and composers whose individual lines of work both explore the unique acoustic qualities as well as the aesthetic and conceptual contemplation of sound. Their instrument is made of frozen organic matters. The disintegration and impact of organic matter onto a membrane of digital sensors and transducers will generate visual and sound landscape. This proposal has been recognised for producing new sounds in cross-border areas between natural processes, organic materials and digital devices, exploring various parameters of time, processes and cycles.

Adam Basanta is a sound artist, composer, and performer of experimental music. His work traverses sound installations, experimental electronic and chamber music composition, site-specific interventions, and laptop performance. Across disciplines and media, he interrogates intersections between conceptual and sensory dimensions of listening, the materiality of technological apparatus, and the instabilities of instrumentality. His sound installations have been presented  internationally in galleries, festivals and institutions and have been awarded several international prizes.

Gil Delindro is a multidisciplinary artist based between Porto and Berlin. Through a cross-border practice, tracing film-making, sound, installation, performance and field research, his work offers a detailed bridge between mediums, facing concepts such as animism, memory and post digital conflicts.  Delindro works primarily with raw organic elements and analogue self-built processes, creating a very physical, direct and strong sound work that embraces both a concrete and unique imaginary land. His artwork has received several prizes and been presented in a extensive variety of locations, from rural areas in Africa and Europe to museums and venues in Toronto, São Paulo, Marrakesh, New York and Europe extensively. His practice is based upon constant field research in isolated landscapes.

The second residency at LABoral has been awarded to Maotik, with its project Aeryon. This work revolves around the visualisation of landscape and its representation by meas of surveillance cameras and the use of real-time data. It proposes to use drones -which is very much in line with the work developed at LABoral's fabLAB- and surveillance cameras (geopolitical component), real-time data visualisation, poetic interpretation of the landscape, generative graphics and field recordings, all this combined with a geopolitical and social criticism.

Mathieu Le Sourd (Maotik) is a Digital artist based in Montreal whose work focuses on the creation of immersive multimedia environments and generative visuals. His work has recently been presented in various festivals around the world, such as Live Cinema in Rio, the Plums Festival in Moscow, Visiones in Lima.

In 2013, he produced the critically-acclaimed immersive multimedia performance DROMOS, which was presented at the SATosphere in Montreal as part of the Mutek festival.

Four residencies at Avatar, CTM Festival, hTh and Le Lieu Unique

The four residencies awarded by ENCAC and their corresponding projects are Christian Skjødt, with Aeterofoner, at Avatar, Quebec; Enrique Tomás, with Embodied Gestures, at CTM Festival, in Berlin; Transforma, with Manufactory, at hTh, in Montpellier; and Matthew Biederman and Marko Peljhan, with Soft Probe, in Le Lieu Unique, Nantes.

The Danish artist and composer Christian Skjødt will draw on the live and inventions of Leon Theremin. Beyond the musical instrument named after him, the object of his residency will be to go deeper in the research on the detection and follow-up of electro-magnetic waves.

Enrique Tomás will develop its project Embodied Gestures. Enrique has a long experience as a dedicated researcher and is very familiar with all sorts of technologies and interfaces: From off-the-shelf MPCs to home-made digital instruments. In Embodied Gestures, Tomás tries to find a way to encode our musical intentions within digital instruments.

ManuFactory, by Transforma, is a performance installation with a maximum duration of three days. It consists of an open stage where six performers or “workers” stage a choreography of repetitive tasks that remind us of a production line. With this project, Transforma proposes an interdisciplinary collaboration with performers, choreographers and musicians that meets the goals set for the residency at hTh: i.e., widening the boundaries of the stage act regarding digital art, new technologies and contemporary audiovisual creation.

Last but not least, the proposal Soft Probe, by Matthew Biederman and Marko Peljhan, focuses on researching and creating a tactical environment with software-defined radios to explore the paradigms of contemporary communication. The artists' usage of open-code software and equipment, their focus on the lack of privacy and their deep understanding of the changes in SDR technology will combine to meet their goal of creating a machine capable of registering an electro-magnetic spectrum that is alive and autonomous.
