Plat0 at LABoral will host a new edition of the Technological Breakfast this Friday 12 April, which is organised by Gijón City Council, through the Centro Municipal de Empresas [Gijón’s Municipal Centre for Companies] and Gijón Science and Technology Park (PCTG), in collaboration with the University Institute of Industrial Technology in Asturias (IUTA). Interactive Systems for an Intelligent City is the common theme which will be addressed by the three presentations in this conference with free admission, during which different collaborative experiences in the development of innovative projects in various sectors are regularly presented by both companies and institutions and research groups.

The Technical Manager of LABoral, David Dalmazzo, and the Coordinator of fabLAB Asturias, David Pello, will present the research project TheDrone which they run from the art centre’s Digital Fabrication Laboratory which links up digital fabrication, electronic design and experimental software as well as data visualisation and interface design. http://www.laboralcentrodearte.org/es/recursos/obras/thedrone/view

With the use of electronics and open code software, automated aerial apparatus, known as UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), are designed and fabricated. Throughout 2013, different stages of the project are being completed including the implementation of systems that enable the programming of automated flight routes, the collection of environmental data, and the adding-on of devices such as high definition cameras in order to film moving images from aerial views.

TheDrone also includes workshops which deal with questions relating to the theory and practice of the aerodynamic design of drones based on propeller (quadrocopter), wing  and zeppelin; use of open source electronics, flight data visualisation systems  and information collection. One of the goals of TheDrone is to use UAV as a mapping tool for data related to the city. In this scope, the project fits in with Smart Cities. The technology that is added to the drone has been designed with free software at fabLaB. Besides this, as an added value TheDrone will make the device available as an artistic tool for future projects - for example, as an obvious use it could serve as a camera to record the outdoors or moving images.

Also, in the course of the technological breakfast Ignacio Escudero of Altabox, a company in residence at LABoral, and José Villanueva from Prodintec, will present the project on interactive dressing rooms, The Fitting Room of the Future. For his part, the researcher at IUTA, Rubén Muñiz, will present the Bodygrammer research enterprise on three-dimensional measuring of the human body.
