The artist Cristina Busto, with her project Generadores de sombras [Shadow Generators], has been selected as the winner of the fifth edition of the LABjoven_Experimenta award, jointly organised by LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Gijón, and the Ministry of Social Welfare of the Principality of Asturias.

Generadores de sombras involves, in the words of the artist herself, the start of a line of work which combines visual arts and video, consisting of video-installations, with its final stage being an audiovisual performance. At LABoral, Cristina Busto will create an audiovisual installation which will at the same time be a film set. Once the process and the action rehearsals have been completed, a visual show will be performed live, a sequence plan for the public.

All of the elements which are used for working in the exhibition room will form part of this installation, which will also include a video piece documenting the performance.

The jury which unanimously awarded the prize was formed by Andrés Albuerne Frutos, on behalf of the Ministry of Social Welfare, as president; Luis Feás, curator and art critic; Jaime Luis Martín, Director of Castrillón’s Municipal Board of Culture, head of the Valey cultural centre, editor of web page Ajimez Arte and art critic; Benjamin Weil, Activities Director of LABoral; Ana Botella, Head of Exhibitions and Publications at LABoral; and Margarita Llamas of the Ministry of Social Welfare, who acted as secretary. All of them agreed on singling out “the interrelation between video, image, theatre, set design, performance and her desire to set out measures for the future preservation of the work”, as proposed by the artist in Generadores de sombras.

Cristina Busto (Avilés, Asturias) graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Cuenca. She has exhibited her works at Museo Barjola (Gijón), the Casa Municipal de Cultura [Municipal House of Culture] in Avilés, in the retrospective exhibition “Al norte” [Northern] at the Revillagigedo Palace (Gijón), El Hervidero (Gijón), the Círculo de bellas Artes [Academy of Fine Arts] in Madrid, La Casa Encendida (Madrid), at the Centro de Arte 2 de Mayo (Madrid), at MACBA in the show ¿Estáis listos para la televisión? [Are you ready for TV?] (Barcelona) and at the La Regenta art centre (Palma).

She has participated in festivals including LOOP, Animadrid, OPTICA and Ingravid and collaborated with playwright Rodrigo García in the creation of visuals for his work Versus. She was selected on three occasions for the Exhibition of Visual Arts in Asturias, she won the INJUVE prize for audiovisual creation in 2006 with her first animated short film Plei, and was awarded with first prize in the 143 Delicias video competition, Madrid. Additionally, in 2008 she received the highly commended award in the Generaciones [Generations] contest of Obra Social Caja, Madrid [Caja Madrid Social Work] for her video piece La dulce alienación [Sweet Alienation]. In 2009 she was the prize winner of the Anime section of the video contest En piezas [In Pieces] at La Casa Encendida, Madrid, for her work “Pruebas definitivas” [Definitive Pieces].

At LABoral, she has been the artist leading the creative workshops  in the summer camp for children this last July, held under the title Hacemos una peli [Let´s make a film]; and she has also featured in the live cinema event for the Phantasmagoria in two festival with Fasenuova.

Currently, she lives in Berlin and continues producing as a self-taught professional as well as giving educational workshops to school students.

The LABjoven_Experimenta Award celebrates its fifth edition in the year 2011 and is dedicated to experimental artistic projects (installations, multimedia installations, actions, interventions and any other creative process) specifically conceived for its setting up at LABoral. Aimed at Asturian artists or collectives, born or resident in the Principality of Asturias, or up to the second generation of descendants of Asturian emigrants, aged 35 or under, it provides 11,800 € for the production of the selected proposal.

In previous editions, the following artists and projects were awarded: Pablo de Soto with Situation Room (2007); Fernando Gutiérrez with Crisálidas [Chyrsalides] (2008); Alicia Jiménez with En barbecho [Left Fallow] (2009); and Adrián Cuervo with Dédalo España (2010).
